Buying Fine Jewellery in Hong Kong: A Guide for Australian Visitors
Not long ago, a couple from Brisbane collected an engagement ring from our studio in Central. They had done their homework before flying, and they told us — with some delight — that the difference between our price and the quotes they had gathered at home came to roughly the cost of their Hong Kong holiday. The ring went home with a story already attached to it.
We hear versions of this from Australian visitors often enough that it felt worth writing down properly: why fine jewellery tends to cost less in Hong Kong, what to look for when you buy here, and how to plan a visit around a few days in the city.
Why Hong Kong prices compare so well
There are three structural reasons, and none of them are tricks.
There is no sales tax here. Hong Kong charges no GST or VAT on jewellery — nothing is added at the register. Compared with the 10% GST built into Australian retail prices, the difference begins before any conversation about the piece itself does.
Hong Kong is a gemstone trading hub. Stones from across Asia and beyond change hands in this city, which keeps sourcing close, competitive, and transparent for jewellers who know where to look.
Some jewellers cut their own stones. We are one of them. Our family has precision-cut sapphires, rubies, and other coloured stones in our own workshops since 1991, and both cutting factories remain in-house today. Fewer hands between the rough stone and the finished setting generally means a better price for the person who ends up wearing it.
How much you save depends entirely on the piece, so we won't quote a percentage — but we genuinely encourage you to bring a quote from home and compare like for like: carat, colour, clarity, certification. The comparison is the point.
What to look for, wherever you buy
A few habits will serve you well with any jeweller, ourselves included:
- Ask for independent certification. A reputable stone can be verified by an independent laboratory, and a reputable jeweller will be glad you asked. We offer certification on request.
- Ask where the stones come from and who cut them. A jeweller who knows their supply chain will enjoy answering this question.
- View stones side by side. Colour is relative — a sapphire that looks deep on its own may look different next to two others. Take the time; a good jeweller will give it to you.
- Get the details in writing. Stone weights, treatments, metal, and price, before anything is made or paid for.

Most visitors say hello on WhatsApp before they fly, and we arrange a private appointment at our studio in Central — Room 1702, Waga Commercial Centre, 99 Wellington Street, in the heart of the city. Tell us your travel dates and what you have in mind, and we will have suitable stones and pieces ready on the table when you arrive.
Ready-to-wear pieces can go home with you the same day. A bespoke commission — a piece designed around a stone we choose together — typically takes several weeks, which rarely fits inside a holiday. It doesn't need to: we ship finished pieces worldwide, free and fully insured, so your commission follows you home to Australia once it is complete.
Practical notes for the trip home
Keep your certificate and receipt together — your insurer at home will want both, and they make any future valuation straightforward. And do check Australia's current traveller concession before you fly, and declare your purchase as required on arrival; it is worth building this into your comparison so there are no surprises. Even with duties accounted for, our Australian clients tell us the trip was worth making.
