Ruby vs Pink Sapphire: What's the Difference?
Here's a fact that surprises almost everyone: ruby and pink sapphire are the same mineral — corundum. The only thing that separates them is colour. So where exactly is the line, and which should you choose?

Same stone, different name
Corundum coloured red is a ruby. Corundum in any other colour — blue, yellow, violet, and yes, pink — is a sapphire. The colouring agent is mostly chromium: a lot of it gives the deep red of a ruby; a little gives the delicate blush of a pink sapphire.
Where does pink become red?
This is the genuinely debated part. There's no universal scientific cut-off — it comes down to a trade and laboratory judgement about saturation and tone. A vivid, saturated pinkish-red may be graded a ruby by one lab and a "purplish-pink sapphire" by another. Because "ruby" carries more prestige (and price), that single word can shift a stone's value significantly. A trustworthy jeweller will show you the certification and explain the call.
"Pigeon's blood" and the top of the market
The most coveted rubies — a pure, vivid red with a faint blue undertone — are described as "pigeon's blood," historically from Burma (Myanmar). These are among the most valuable coloured stones in the world, carat for carat often exceeding diamonds.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a ruby if you want drama, depth, and a stone steeped in symbolism — passion, protection, vitality.
- Choose a pink sapphire if you love romance and softness, often at a gentler price for the same size, with the same superb hardness for everyday wear.
Both are corundum, so both are wonderfully durable — ideal for rings worn daily.
A note on value
Carat for carat, fine rubies typically cost more than pink sapphires — which means a pink sapphire can be a beautiful, budget-smart way to get a larger, more vivid stone. There's no wrong answer; there's only the colour you fall for.
