Emerald Guide: Origin, Colour & Care
No gemstone has been loved for longer than the emerald. Cleopatra prized them; Mughal emperors carved them. Their green is unlike any other — and choosing one well rewards a little knowledge.
Colour: the heart of an emerald
An emerald is graded above all on the richness and evenness of its green. The most prized show a pure, slightly bluish green with vivid saturation — not too dark, not washed out. A stone that glows green from across a room is doing exactly what an emerald should.
Origin: Colombian vs Zambian
- Colombian emeralds are the historic benchmark — a warm, pure green, often with a slightly softer tone. Muzo and Chivor are legendary sources.
- Zambian emeralds tend toward a cooler, bluish-green with excellent clarity and saturation.
Neither is universally "better" — it's a matter of the green you love. We work with both and will show you the difference side by side.
The truth about inclusions and oil
Emeralds almost always have inclusions — jewellers poetically call them the jardin ("garden"). A flawless emerald is so rare it should make you suspicious. Most emeralds are also treated with oil or resin to improve clarity; this is a centuries-old, accepted practice. What matters is the degree of treatment (none / minor / moderate / significant) and that it's disclosed. We always tell you.
Caring for emerald jewellery
Emeralds are more delicate than sapphires or rubies, so a little care keeps them beautiful:
- Clean gently with a soft cloth and lukewarm soapy water — never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner (these can damage the oil treatment and the stone).
- Avoid harsh chemicals, perfume, and chlorine; put your jewellery on last when getting ready.
- Store separately in a soft pouch so harder stones don't scratch it.
- Re-oil if needed: over many years an emerald can be re-treated by a specialist to refresh its clarity — ask us.
