Buying your first serious piece of jewellery — an engagement ring, a milestone gift, something for yourself — can feel daunting. The prices are real, the vocabulary is unfamiliar, and everyone seems to assume you already know the rules. You don't need to. Here's an honest, jargon-free guide.

1. Start with the stone, not the budget

With coloured gemstones, the stone is most of the value and almost all of the character. Decide what speaks to you — the blue of a sapphire, the green of an emerald, the red of a ruby — and build from there. A trustworthy jeweller will then find a beautiful stone within your budget rather than pushing you past it.

2. Understand what you're paying for

Four things drive the price of a coloured-gemstone piece:

• The stone — its colour, size, clarity, origin, and whether it's treated.
• The metal — 18K gold (white, yellow, or rose) and how much of it.
• The craftsmanship — design and hand-setting.
• Certification — independent verification of what the stone is.

A good jeweller will itemise these for you. If someone won't, that's a flag.

3. Ask these five questions

• What is the stone, and is it natural?
• Is it treated (heated, oiled), and to what degree?
• Where is it from, and is it certified?
• What's your return, resizing, and warranty policy?
• Can it be made bespoke?

The quality of the answers tells you almost everything about who you're buying from.

4. Consider bespoke — it's more accessible than you think

5. Buy from someone you can talk to

Fine jewellery is a relationship, not a transaction. You want a jeweller who'll answer a WhatsApp message a year later when you want it resized, or who'll help you choose the next piece. In Hong Kong, that human, unhurried service is what separates a house from a counter.

6. Don't rush the important ones

For an engagement ring or a milestone piece, a single conversation — in person in Central or over video — saves you from the two most common regrets: the wrong size of stone for the budget, and a setting that doesn't suit daily life.
