Choosing a Sapphire Engagement Ring
A sapphire engagement ring is a quietly confident choice. It says I wanted something with more colour, more history, more of us in it — without saying a word. As a Hong Kong house that cuts its own stones, here's how we'd guide you through choosing one.

1. Colour comes first
With sapphires, colour is everything — and "sapphire" doesn't only mean blue. They come in blue, pink, yellow, violet, peach, and the rare, coveted padparadscha (a sunset blend of pink and orange). The finest blues are vivid but not inky; held to the light they glow rather than darken. Choose the hue that suits the wearer's skin and wardrobe, not just the one with a name.
2. Understand heat treatment
Most sapphires on the market are gently heated to improve colour and clarity — this is normal, stable, and accepted. Unheated stones, with naturally beautiful colour, are rarer and command a premium. Neither is "better"; what matters is that your jeweller discloses it. We always tell you exactly what you're buying.
3. Origin tells a story
Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Burma, Madagascar, Kashmir — origin influences both character and value. A reputable jeweller can show you the stone's certification and explain its provenance. Ask. A good answer is part of what you're paying for.
4. Cut over carat
A well-cut sapphire returns light evenly and looks alive from every angle. A larger stone that's poorly cut will always look duller than a smaller, beautifully cut one. Don't chase the carat number at the expense of the cut.
5. The setting protects and frames
Sapphires (and rubies) are hard and excellent for daily wear. A halo of diamonds amplifies size and sparkle; a three-stone setting tells a past-present-future story; a simple solitaire lets the colour speak. Consider 18K gold in a tone that flatters the stone — rose gold warms pink sapphires, white gold cools blue ones.
6. Ethics and certification
Ask where the stone came from and whether it's conflict-free. At Gems Excellence, our stones are cut in our own family facilities and sourced ethically — and we provide certification on request.
A few questions to ask any jeweller
- Is this sapphire heated or unheated?
- What's the origin, and is it certified?
- Can it be made bespoke around a stone I choose?
- What's your return and resizing policy?
